터보레인져는 1989년 2월 25일에 방영하여 1990년 2월 23일.전 51화로 구성된 전대입니다.
슈퍼전대씨리즈로 치자면 11번째 작품이죠. 국내에는 특이하게 대영팬더가 아닌 현대통상을 통해 들어온 작품으로 국내팬들에게도 어느정도 어필이 되기도했죠.터보레인져는 제가 초등학교 5학년때 더빙판으로 접해보았으며 지금도 좋아하는 작품이랍니다.
그럼 지금부터 이 작품을 낱낱이 파헤쳐 보기로 하겠습니다.~_~

여러분들은 터보레인져하면 어떤 이미지가 눈앞에 떠오르시나요?
아마도 '자동차'와 '고등학생'이 가장 먼저 떠오르실겁니다.
그도 그럴것이 터보렌은 이 자동차란 모티브와 한창 꿈많고 질풍노도의 시기를 달리는 고등학생들의 이야기를 전면적으로 다룬 작품이니까요. 그러나 대체 "자동차와 고교생이 무슨 연관이 있는거냐?" 하고 많은 사람들은 여기서부터 의문을 가지실겁니다.
그렇습니다.아무리 생각해도 저 두 주제에 연관되는것은 도무지 떠오르지가 않죠.
아직 면허증도 없는 고교생이 자동차를 모는것부터가 뭔가 언밸러스한 분위기가 느껴지니까요;;
사실,자동차에 관한 모티브란것도 그리 활용도가 높은것도 아니었습니다.기껏해야 5인의 메카가 여러 자동차들을 디자인했을뿐.
스토리는 요정을 볼수있는 순수한 마음을 가진 5인의 고등학생들이 고대로부터 부활한 폭마백족과 싸우는 다소,판타지적노선입니다.나중에야 이 자동차에 관한 모티브를 제작진들이 좀더 파고들어 내놓은 작품이 바로 96년도의 카~~레인져이죠.
결국 터보렌은 자동차란 모티브는 전체적으로 빈약해보였지만 판타지틱한 노선과 다소 교훈적인 내용이 담긴 의미있는 에피소드만은 충실한 느낌이었습니다.
이렇게 무난하게 진행되던 터보렌은 스토리중반,이 작품을 말하면서 반드시 빼놓을수없는 캐릭터가 등장하니 바로 떠돌이 폭마.야미마루(인간체-나가레보시 히카루)입니다.
다른 작품의 제 3세력의 역할에 해당되는 캐릭터로 반은 폭마,반은 인간이란 다소 어중간한(?)존재인 야미마루는 14화에 터보렌들이 다니는 고교에 전학오게되죠.물론 본목적이야 터보레인져들을 해치우는것이지만.
이 야미마루의 등장은 스토리에도 큰 활력을 불러일으키면서 팽팽한 대결구도를 불러일으키는데 성공하며 야미마루란 캐릭터도 단순한 적이 아니라 과거,인간들에게 멸시받아 복수의 감정을 품은 냉혹하고 어두운 면모를 가졌음에도 한편으로는 슬픈 내면도 존재하는 매력있는 캐릭터로 크게 어필이 되기도했습니다.
야미마루의 등장후,폭마백족간부들의 도중하차(자동차로 변하는 모 뚱보군 제외;;)란 엄청난 사건이 벌어지며 또 다른 여성 떠돌이폭마.키리카의 등장으로 후반부는 거의 터보레인져와 떠돌이폭마들의 비장한 대결구도로 진행되며 드라마적으로도 충분히 완성도높은 면모를 보여주며 결국 최종화엔 야미마루와 키리카는 개심하게되고 폭마백족을 멸한 터보레인져들은 졸업식을 맞이하는 감동적인 결말을 거두는데 성공했습니다.
특촬의 영상미도 한층 볼거리를 더한것도 장점이라 할수있는데 전작.라이브맨에 이어 더욱 화려해진 전투씬,개인맴버 단독으로 이루어진 피니쉬기술,5인의 단합된 팀워크를 보여주는 연속 콤비네이션어택등. 터보레인져부터 전대는 그 전투씬에도 화려함과 다양한 볼거리로 발전했다고 생각합니다.
그러나 한가지 유감스러운 점이라면 이 터보레인져가 국내판으로 들어오면서 현대통상측에 만든 다소 절망적인(....)주제곡,질낮은 더빙등의 이유로 그리 좋은 이미지를 갖고있지않은 팬분들이 더러 계신점이 아쉽다고 생각합니다.
이미 16년이 지난 작품이지만 한번 깊이 파고들고 보신다면 웬만한 밀레니엄전대못지않는 드라마성과 재미를 느끼실수있으실겁니다. 마지막으로 글을 정리하면서 다시한번 이 작품의 의미를 되짚어볼까합니다. 이 작품이 전체적으로 보여준 주제는 '청춘의 길'입니다.
엔딩곡이 '지그재그 청춘로드'인것처럼 한창 고민거리 많고 어디로 샐지모르는 이들이 걷는길은 그야말로 지그재그로 되있는 길이죠.그런 지그재그가 된 길을 5명은 자동차(요정을 볼수있는 순수한 마음으로 해석)를 탄채 함께 험난한 길을 걷고 어려운 길에 처한 맴버가 있으면 모두가 협력해서 도와주면서 최종화엔 마침내 5명모두 그 길을 빠져나올수있던것이라 생각합니다.
물론,길을 빠져나온 그들의 앞에는 또 다시 새로운 시작을 알리는 길이 기다리고있지만요.
폭마백족을 물리치고 청춘의 졸업식을 마친 젊음의 전사.터보레인져는 지금 이 글을 쓰고있는 저한테는 앞으로도 좋아할것이고 잊혀지지않는 전대물이 될것이라고 믿습니다.
